ERN RARE-LIVER Clinical Exchange Programme: Reports from Paris

The ERN RARE-LIVER Clinical Exchange Programme offers clinicians and healthcare professionals the opportunity to gain experience and share knowledge across member and partner centres, fostering collaboration and improving care for patients with rare liver diseases.

“During my two week Clinical Exchange Programme at Hospital Beaujon in Paris, I had the privilege of joining the Liver Vascular Diseases group under the warm guidance of Dr. Aurélie Plessier, Dr. Pierre-Emmanuel Rautou, Dr. Lucile Moga, and Dr. Audrey Payancé. Before my arrival, Dr. Plessier and her secretary had kindly prepared a detailed schedule that allowed me to fully immerse myself in diverse clinical activities. I attended consultations with patients affected by portal-sinusoidal vascular disorders, Budd-Chiari syndrome, and portal vein thrombosis among other diseases, gaining valuable insights into their diagnosis and management. Additionally, I observed hepatic catheterizations and transjugular hepatic biopsies performed by hepatologists in the hemodynamics unit.
The programme also provided me with the opportunity to participate in multidisciplinary meetings, including joint sessions between hepatology and hematology teams discussing anticoagulant therapy in complex cases. I further attended pathology meetings where liver biopsies from patients with vascular disorders were reviewed and Radiology staff in which possible ways to achieve recanalization in vascular liver diseases were discussed. Accompanying Dr. Plessier to a FILFOIE meeting broadened my understanding of the French national health network, which fosters collaboration among professionals and associations dedicated to rare liver diseases.
Finally, I participated in the French national meeting on rare liver diseases, where I learned about FILFOIE’s current and future initiatives aimed at advancing knowledge and patient care in this field. I am deeply grateful to Dr. Plessier for her supervision and hospitality, and to the ERN RARE-LIVER office for facilitating this valuable exchange, which strengthens cooperation among European centres and advances in the field of rare liver diseases.”
