Biliary Malformations

About the Working Group

The Biliary Malformations Working Group brings together clinicians, surgeons, researchers and other specialists with expertise in congenital and structural malformations of the biliary tract.

Biliary malformations include choledochal malformations, previously also known as choledochal cysts or bile duct cysts. These are congenital malformations of the biliary tract in which parts of the bile ducts may be dilated. The malformations can involve bile ducts inside the liver, outside the liver, or both.

Choledochal malformations are rare, but they are clinically important because they can cause symptoms in children and adults, may require specialist surgical management, and are associated with a long-term risk of complications, including cholangitis, bile duct obstruction and malignancy.

The Working Group aims to improve clinical information, patient information, diagnostic pathways, surgical and long-term follow-up guidance, education and collaboration across ERN RARE-LIVER centres.

Get Involved

Clinicians, surgeons, researchers, radiologists, nurses, patient representatives and patient organisations interested in biliary malformations are welcome to become involved in the Working Group.

The group works on improving information, diagnosis, referral, surgery, follow-up, patient resources and collaboration for people with biliary malformations and choledochal malformations.
