About the Working Group

The Biliary Atresia (BA) Working Group brings together paediatric hepatologists, surgeons, researchers and other specialists with expertise in biliary atresia and related neonatal cholestatic liver diseases.

Biliary atresia is a rare, life-threatening disease of the bile ducts that occurs in newborns. It is characterised by obstruction and scarring of the bile ducts, leading to cholestasis and progressive liver damage. Early diagnosis and timely treatment are essential, as the Kasai portoenterostomy offers the best chance of delaying or preventing liver transplantation.

The Working Group aims to improve diagnosis, care delivery, registry documentation, research collaboration, patient information, treatment evaluation and education across Europe and beyond.

Get Involved

Clinicians, surgeons, researchers, nurses, allied healthcare professionals, patient representatives and patient organisations interested in biliary atresia are welcome to become involved in the Working Group.

The group works on registry development, clinical studies, patient information, education, workshops and collaborative projects to improve care and outcomes for children with biliary atresia.
