Centre Information

University Medical Centre Groningen (UMCG) is the university medical centre in the Northern Netherlands. We offer complex care to patients in our region who require special treatments or suffer from rare diseases or multiple conditions. They come to us for care and treatments they cannot receive somewhere else in our region. This distinguishes us from the general hospitals.

We are one of three hospitals in the Netherlands that perform liver transplantation for adults. For some highly complex treatments, like liver transplantation in children, the UMCG is the only hospital in the Netherlands.

At our UMCG Beatrix Children's Hospital (BKZ) we examine, treat, and operate children aged 0 to 18 with rare and complex diseases, who often require more extensive or specialised care.

The care in the Netherlands is highly regulated by Dutch laws making access to care in our country limited.

Liver diseases and transplants

All diseases that are deemed treatable with a liver transplantation are evaluated and treated in the UMCG. We have a program for emerging diseases in the oncological field including irresectable hilar cholangiocarcinoma, colorectal liver metastases and neuroendocrine tumors. This care is highly protocolised and regulated by dutch law since the number of grafts available in our country is limited.

Particular rare liver disease expertise

Liver diseases and transplants
Fortunately, liver disease is not very common in children. Therefore, the Netherlands has chosen to provide this care in a single location. This is called "concentrating care." Therefore, all liver transplants for children are performed only at the Beatrix Children's Hospital in the Netherlands.

UMCG Centre of Expertise for Congenital Biliary Duct Diseases

The UMCG is a center of expertise for all rare liver diseases that require liver transplantation such as congenital biliary disorders, metabolic disorders, acute liver failure, liver malignancy and others. Children with these conditions can go to the Beatrix Children's Hospital for examination and treatment.
