Centre Information

ASST Papa Giovanni XXIII in Bergamo is a tertiary public hospital in Lombardy and hosts the School of Medicine and Surgery of the University of Milano-Bicocca (UNIMIB). It’s widely recognized as Italy’s leading multivisceral transplant and pediatric transplant unit, particularly in the management of vascular complications after liver transplantation, as well as national referral centre for complex and rare liver diseases in both adults and children.

Our dedicated centre for rare hepatic diseases manages a broad spectrum of conditions, including autoimmune liver diseases (Primary Biliary Cholangitis, Autoimmune Hepatitis, and Primary Sclerosing Cholangitis), Wilson disease, biliary atresia, choledochal cysts, genetic cholestatic liver diseases, Alagille syndrome, congenital hepatic fibrosis, Fontan-associated liver disease, vascular liver diseases, complications of portal hypertension, and liver and biliary tract neoplasms. Our multidisciplinary team has extensive and long-standing experience in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of these patients, including access to liver transplantation for children, adolescents, and adults. The transplant program has extensive expertise in split-liver transplantation (in situ and ex situ), reduced-size transplantation, combined organ transplantation, and living-donor transplantation.

A high-volume interventional radiology service with extensive expertise is available for the management of vascular complications and for pre- and post-transplant procedures. Our clinical expertise is further supported by collaboration with consultants covering all relevant medical and surgical subspecialties. The centre participates in several national and international research projects and study groups and is involved in international clinical trials, both with and without investigational drugs, within its areas of expertise. It also participates in collaborative studies promoted by Italian and European scientific societies in the field of paediatric hepatology.

Members of the ERN team are actively involved in national and international networks focused on these diseases, including VALDIG (Vascular Liver Disease Group) and ESPGHAN (European Society for Paediatric Gastroenterology, Hepatology and Nutrition).
