Centre information

The Reference Centre for Biliary Atresia and Genetic Cholestasis "Centre de Référence de l’Atrésie des Voies Biliaires et des Cholestases Génétiques" (CRAVB-CG) is the coordination centre (CRMR) of the French national network for biliary atresia and genetic cholestasis (AVB-CG).

The French Ministry of Health officially accredited this reference centre as the coordinating expert centre for biliary atresia (CRAVB) in December 2005.

The CRAVB-CG is located within the Department of Paediatric Hepatology and Liver Transplantation at Hôpital Bicêtre, which belongs to the Public Assistance Hospitals of Paris (AP-HP). The centre coordinates a national network dedicated to the care and surveillance of rare paediatric liver diseases. This network extends across France and includes 4 constitutive reference centres (CRMR) with complementary expertise in paediatric liver diseases(Necker, Lyon, Marseille, Toulouse), as well as 10 competence centres (CCMR) that provide local patient care and follow-up. The accreditation by the French Ministry of Health was renewed in 2023.

The CRAVB-CG is organised around a multidisciplinary and highly specialised medical team with recognised expertise in paediatric liver diseases, paediatric hepatology and liver transplantation, specific medical treatments, and innovative therapies. The centre also works closely with related departments specialising in paediatric surgery, paediatric diagnostic and interventional radiology, digestive endoscopy, ERCP, paediatric intensive care and anaesthesiology, anatomopathology, biochemistry, toxicology, virology, and molecular biology.

Research activities within the department cover the mechanisms and treatment of paediatric liver diseases, bile secretion and cholestasis, genetic liver diseases, liver transplantation, and innovative therapies.

The CRAVB-CG, together with the CRMVF and the CRMIVB, are the three French reference centres dedicated to rare liver diseases. They therefore belong to the Filfoie rare diseases network, of which they form an integral part.

Among the 23 French rare diseases networks (Filières de Santé des Maladies Rares), created by the French Ministry of Health and Solidarity in 2015 as part of the second rare diseases plan (PNMR2), Filfoie is the network dedicated to adult and paediatric rare liver diseases.

The purpose of the Filfoie network is to manage and coordinate actions by bringing together reference and competence centres, diagnostic laboratories, research units, universities, educational, social and medico-social structures, and patient organisations.
