Centre information

Gastroenterology and Liver Unit, ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo, Milan

ASST Santi Paolo e Carlo is a public health centre based upon two university hospitals: San Paolo (480 beds) and San Carlo Borromeo hospital (560 beds), both located in the South-Western area of Milan. Overall, the two hospitals serve a population of about 400,000 inhabitants. Clinical, teaching and research activities of the Gastroenterology and Liver Unit extend over both hospitals, with a specific interest to patients with chronic liver diseases. It operates as a tertiary referral centre for patients with autoimmune hepatitis, chronic cholestatic diseases of autoimmune origin, and Wilson’s disease. Patient care is oriented towards a multidisciplinary approach, with strong commitment to integrate the team’s expertise in the hepatology, gastrointestinal and internal medicine fields with the in-house network of specialists expert in endoscopy, diagnostic/interventional radiology, liver surgery, intensive-care, haematology and neurology. The Unit works in close cooperation with the liver transplant centres at the Niguarda hospital and the Istituto Nazionale Tumori in Milan.
