The Royal Free Hospital has and experience and expertise in the management of rare liver diseases. We offer dedicated, specialist clinics in:
- Immune-mediated liver diseases (autoimmune hepatitis, primary biliary cholangitis, primary sclerosing cholangitis, IgG4-associated liver disease and others)
- Genetic liver diseases including alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency and Wilson’s disease
- Vascular liver disease
- Liver diseases in pregnancy
- Primary immunodeficiency-related liver disease
- Checkpoint immunotherapy-associated liver disease
- Liver oncology
Additionally, the Royal Free Hospital is a regional centre for the management of hepatobiliary malignancy, viral hepatitis treatment and liver transplantation and offers access to clinical trials and leads research in many of these rare liver diseases.

Centre information
The Sheila Sherlock Liver Centre at the Royal Free Hospital is an internationally recognised unit providing the full spectrum of hepatopancreaticobiliary care for patients. It is closely associated with the University College London Institute for Liver and Digestive Health. Based in North London, the Royal Free has a body of 20 consultant hepatologists and provides inpatient and outpatient care for patients with liver disease and access to specialist services including liver transplantation, interventional radiology and hepatobiliary cancer care.
The Royal Free liver centre provides care for patients in North London and acts a national and regional referral centre for hepatology. The centre offers clinical expertise and experience, provides shared care for patients with complex or rare liver diseases with their local hospital or other regional centres and has an active portfolio of clinical research trials across all subspecialties, including immune-mediated liver diseases, viral hepatitis, oncology, liver transplantation and metabolic liver diseases, thereby enabling patients access to novel therapies.
