Centre information

The Hospital Clínic de Barcelona, with more than 100 years of history, is a public health centre of reference in the city of Barcelona, in Catalonia and in the world. The hospital is a public consortium formed by the Government of Catalonia and the University of Barcelona, and is the community hospital for the Barcelona Esquerra area, with a population of 540,000 . Moreover, it is a tertiary hospital of high complexity that develops lines of activity for patients in Catalonia and, in certain specific procedures for patients from other Communities in Spain.
The Clinic covers almost all medical and surgical specialties and leads partnerships with various health institutions to provide high-quality care. The Hospital occupies a leading position in different rankings based on efficiency and quality indicators and reputation among patients and professionals. The hospital is a reference institution at national and international levels. Most research activities are carried out through the August Pi i Sunyer Institute for Biomedical Research (IDIBAPS), which is the top center for scientific production in Spain and is among the top 25 in the world.
The Clinic carries out relevant teaching undergraduate and postgraduate activities, including residents training and the organization of continuing educational projects. University teaching tasks are especially linked to the Faculty of Medicine and Health Sciences of the University of Barcelona. The Hospital Clínic is one of the centers in Spain preferred by Medicine, Nursing, Pharmacy or Psychology students to do the residency.
The Liver Unit of the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona is a national and international reference center for diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases, and has common hospitalization wards as well a an intensive care unit for liver and gastroenterological diseases. The department also includes a hepatic hemodynamics section for diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases, mostly related to portal hypertension. Moreover, the center has a section of gastrointestinal Endoscopy closely related to the diagnosis and treatment of liver diseases. The department of Hepatology includes an outpatient clinic. Regarding to the diagnostic procedures the Hepatology department has a close relationship with the Diagnostic Imaging Center and the department of Pathology.
In addition to diagnosis and treatment of the most common liver diseases, the Department of Hepatology has specific diagnostic and therapeutic teams for liver diseases which are included in the concept of rare diseases. Among them, it must be highlighted that the Department of Hepatology is a national and international reference center for cholestatic and autoimmune liver diseases and conditions affecting the liver vasculature as Budd-Chiari syndrome, idiopathic portal hypertension and non-tumor non-cirrhotic portal vein thrombosis.
