Centre information

Charité – Universitätsmedizin Berlin is one of Europe’s largest university hospitals, with about 100 clinics and research institutes. The Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology, as a center of maximum care, deals with the diagnosis and treatment of rare diseases of the liver and biliary tract, the pancreas and the gastrointestinal tract. We offer the full spectrum of care for liver diseases, including in- and outpatient services, endoscopic therapies and liver transplantation.

The team headed by Prof. Dr. Frank Tacke and his deputy Prof. Dr. Tobias Müller, located at the Campus Virchow-Klinikum, takes care for all aspects of gastroenterology and hepatology. Our institution offers modern diagnostics and individualized treatment protocols and adopt a multidisciplinary approach of a close cooperation with other specialist disciplines such as surgery, radiology or nuclear medicine.

Treatments and services offered at the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology:

• Rare liver and biliary disorders
• Rare diseases of the esophagus, stomach and intestines
• Rare diseases of the pancreas
• Rare hepatobiliary, gastrointestinal and neuroendocrine tumor diseases (NET)
• Rare inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD)
• Gastroenterological and hepatological intensive care medicine
• Nutritional diseases including obesity and short bowel syndrome (SBS)
• High-end endoscopy and sonography (ultrasound)
• Complex endoscopic procedures and minimally invasive therapies
• Evaluation for liver transplantation

As a university institution, the Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology is engaged in the continuous improvement of diagnostic and therapeutic procedures in numerous research projects. This includes the implementation of clinical studies and basic research projects in our laboratories. The Department of Hepatology and Gastroenterology is engaged in numerous international and national research networks in research and practice.

The department of pediatric gastroenterology, nephrology and metabolic diseases at Charité-Universitätsmedizin Berlin covers the whole spectrum of pediatric GI and liver diseases with a special interest and expertise in diagnostics and treatment of rare causes of neonatal cholestasis and providing a comprehensive liver transplantation program (split liver, living donor and participation in EUROTRANSPLANT). Our pediatric liver transplantation program includes a 24/7 medical service afforded by pediatric hepatologists and transplant surgery, a highly experienced pediatric intensive care unit and the continuous specialized out- and in-patient care of pediatric liver transplant recipients.
Expertise in the diagnostics and treatment of rare liver diseases in infants and children is further strengthened by the close interaction with the pediatric metabolic diseases unit, which is part of our department.
